The Hidden Meaning in My Bowls

Colored Ceramic Bowls for Diya Studio

Graduating as a textile designer, I had seriously never imagined myself working on ceramics. Although I do have to admit, if I had a choice, I would have chosen sculpture/ceramics,  as one of my major subjects, because there is something about playing with clay that relaxes your mind. Its my dream to learn how to throw the bowls and own a potters wheel one day, but for now I am extremely happy about creating my colorful bowls, with different pattern on each one of them.

There are three main design patterns I usually follow, although the motives come out totally different. The first one is called, ‘Follow Your Heart’, these are usually trellis sort of designs, running around the bowl, without any restrictions. People who pick these are usually those with a bit of a crazy wild side to them, and due to the society they have to follow a certain way of life, but deep down, they follow their hearts as their true guide.

Second ones are called, ‘Masters Of The Mind’. These are the ones I do A LOT !! They have a trellis patterns, which runs all around the edge of the bowls, with tiny dots in the center. These are picked generally byfor people who have a balance of the head and the heart.

The third one is called the, ‘Wanderer’. These are patterns of tiny motives repeated,  with empty space in the middle. Some times the motives are connected to each other, but a series of dots, or lines. They symbolise the true spirit of a wanderer. Someone who exists, but feels unfit in the confined society, of today. Wants to let go and be a free soul. Walks through life as nothing really matters, because what does matter is not to be found here anyway!!

I have been asked so many times, to read the patterns I draw, and so I looked through my work and realized I was repeatedly doing the same styles of bowls, but different patterns. This made me realise the different types of people I have come across in my life, hence naming my bowls, and making it easier for my customers to understand the meaning behind them. The patterns that attracts you most, is the pattern your soul truly is. I hope you can enjoy these meaningful small bowls, use them in your daily life, as I truly believe the energy I give which painting them, becomes part of your life as and when you use or even see them!!
