Henna at Living in Harmony Party at Cowandilla Primary School

The Living In Harmony Project was run by Barbara from ARA and funded by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. Four schools participated in the project and students worked on cultural awareness and diversity. By mixing the schools, the kids got a chance to experience different cultural activities and also get to meet students from different backgrounds. The event was organized by Australian Refugee Association Inc, at Cowandilla Primary School.

As always painting kids really excites me, as they have so many questions to ask and cheeky comments to make. I especially enjoyed a little boy who wanted a second Henna by me, waiting in line for awhile and then puts forward his unpainted hand in front, of course hiding the painted on thinking I wouldn’t remember him. I smiled and said ” I remember you, and so sorry but i have to touch everyone so wont be able to do another design on you”,  and to that he said, ” But the other painting on my hand is my birth mark, I was born with the design !!!”. I smiled at his innocence and simplicity of being a child, and explained how everyone should be treated just the same, regardless of where we all come from because we are all special, and so hence everyone gets one little gift of Henna to treasure, till next time.

Working on such events in schools make me feel extremely grounded and connected to the community around me.  Coming from another country and making this home, will only happen when we all become one, and accept each others differences and enjoy the rich mix of cultures.
